NEWSBRIEF FEBRUARY 2020

WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR – THE YEAR 2020

(It has been suggested that at least our eyesight should be perfect this year, so maybe more curved walls?) Please note, however, a larger font size as some members have had trouble reading 10point fonts!

NEWS FROM THE WALLS

It is about now that we begin to emerge from a few months of relative hibernation as a Branch and, hopefully, start planning to join in the year’s activities. The Schedule of Events accompanies this NEWSBRIEF; all the dates are correct but some of the venues are yet to be finalised.

The 2020 calendar is largely the work of Tony Breakell who resigned as Venue Finder at the November AGM. He has worked incredibly hard over the past five years (we think it’s that long!) and the branch owes him a great deal. This was recognised at the Annual Dinner in January at the Queen’s Head in Troutbeck when he was presented with the John Stoddart Award. This is awarded each year to a member who has made a significant contribution to the branch or has achieved walling prowess.

Tony and Mary Breakell with the John Stoddart Trophy

The committee agreed that the Award should be shared with Mary Breakell this year in recognition of all she has done setting up and editing the social media sites, particularly the Facebook site which gets substantial numbers of “hits” a week. It also means that the trophy can remain on one mantlepiece the entire year.

The new Venue Finder is Glyn Walsh who, not surprisingly, was enthusiastically voted in at the AGM, after volunteering to take over from Tony.

As you will notice from the Schedule, we have a full programme of events to look forward to this year. All the proposed venues are of “charitable”organisations of one sort or another and all are very grateful for the support we give them. Of course that support relies on all of us, as members who enjoy walling, turning out to compete the work. PLEASE DO YOUR UTMOST TO ATTEND.

In the past, members have also suggested venues for weekends; please keep a look out for any in your neighbourhood and let Glyn know about them! He can then recce the site and advise us accordingly. ( glyn.walsh1@gmail.com )

NEW MEMBERS

There has been a welcome rush of new members in January, several of whom were on a Beginners’ Course last year. We welcome: Alan Tyldesley (Yealand); John Fearnhead (Sedbergh); Chris Clements (Kendal); Andrew Bowen (Manchester); Caroline Mercer (Kirkby Stephen); and Roger Parker (Silverdale – from Otley&Yorkshire Dales DSWA)

We look forward to seeing them all on a wall very shortly and hope they will be regular attendees at our Practice Weekends!

CUMBRIA BRANCH NEWSBRIEF February 2020

OLD MEMBERS

May we remind you that membership fees for DSWA National are due to be paid on 1 January each year, but not everyone gets their act together at that time.
If you have not paid your subscriptions, please do so as soon as possible.
If you do not, your name will not be on the members’ list I get from Alison and you will not receive these exciting NEWSBRIEFS! And perhaps I could also mention the 100 Club which is a relatively painless way of supporting the DSWA, with the added bonus for winners of more than covering the investment! Full details from the office, DSWA website and Waller & Dyker.

NEXT MEMBERS’ PRACTICE MEETING

Our next meeting is the first of the new year’s activities and is the Staveley Wallathon that Bob Bond and George Edington have been putting together. 7 – 8 March. We have already got 10 non Cumbria DSWA members coming, so would like as full a domestic turn out as possible. Please let Chris Bratt know if you are coming and on which days. We are hoping to provide free tea/coffee and lunches on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday night. There will doubtless be beer on tap!

For those of you travelling a distance and wishing to stay overnight : in Staveley

> Eagle and Child Pub > Tarn House
> Li’le Hullets

(Kendal Road Staveley LA8 9LP 01539 821320)
(18 Danes Road Staveley LA8 9PW 01539 821656) (3 Seed Howe Staveley LA8 9PP 01539 821145)

There is also a number of self-catering cottages in Staveley. (Check the ‘Accommodation Staveley Cumbria’ website.)

A car journey away at Ings
> Watermill Inn (A591 Ings LA8 9PY 01539 821309) > The Hill (A591 Ings LA8 9QQ 01539 822217)

And there are dozens of B&Bs, airB&Bs and hotels in Windermere and Kendal.

A field has been set aside for free camping and mobile homes. There are no facilities other than a portaloo! The campsite will be available for 2/3 days before and after the weekend.

Fuller details in separate accompanying document.

BRANCH MEETING

The first branch meeting of the year is to be held on 23 March at 7.00pm at Lane Farm. It is an opportunity for all members to discuss what is going on in the branch and make suggestions for action or change.
In that regard – if anyone has a burning desire to take over from me as Secretary next year ………

I will have been in post for 14 years, man and boy, can you believe? Just saying!

Two things for your consideration:

  1. a)  ways of limiting our carbon footprint. Sharing transport is the obvious first idea, but how toimplement it easily? (Stephen Atkinson)
  2. b)  a fixed time of service for officers of maybe 3 years. Officers could opt to continue nonetheless. This would follow the practice in other societies, where it is understood that membership actually involves a commitment to take up some post at some time. (Pat Adair)

Thanks are due to Anne-Marie for organising, yet again, our Annual Dinner, the third at Troutbeck. It is a good venue and we are considering a return visit in 2021! We have a room of our own and it will seat a maximum of 30 for dinner. The landlord would be pleased to welcome us again, he says!

STOP PRESS

It has been brought my attention (by an IT guru who understands far more about emails than I will ever comprehend!) that some servers will not allow an address on a large number of addresses sent out on Bcc. I send out emails regularly to the whole membership of 86+ on one data base listing. It may be that some of you have been missing postings of my carefully crafted emails and NEWSBRIEFS which might very well end up in your spam or junk mail. Before I re-list the entire data base into small sections of 10 or so, can I ask you to let me know if you DID NOT receive 3 NEWSBRIEFS last year and well over 20 emails? Chris
